12 Days of the Valentine Queen: Day 7

12 Days of the Valentine Queen

Day 7: Berries and Cream

Mmmmm.... 'nuff said, really. Berries? And cream? So decadent. So delicious. So... romantic, really. Sure, I could eat berries with cream any time of year. But this time of year makes me think of it. Back when his title was still "boyfriend", my now-husband once prepared me lobster tails and raspberries with cream on Valentine's Day. I'll never forget it... and the holiday will never be the same without berries and cream! I can't always afford the lobster tails... but berries? Those I can work into the budget...

12 Days of the Valentine Queen: Day 6

12 Days of the Valentine Queen

Day 6: Little Valentines

You know the ones I'm talking about, right? Those tiny little cards with the flimsy envelopes that we all exchanged as children? Oftentimes, you'd decorate a fancy big envelope to act as your "mailbox" and your classmates would deliver cards to you. Such fun!

These days, my children are the ones exchanging the little valentines and they get just as excited as I used to! We'll be working on theirs this weekend and I know we'll share a lot of joy getting them all set for delivery. After Valentine's Day, the cards they've received provide several more weeks of entertainment as they pull them in and out of a decorated shoe-box. Love simple pleasures!

A Reluctant Relationship

"Hey." "Hi." "Nice eyes." "Thanks."

Those five words marked my entire first conversation with my now-husband. We met across a college cafeteria table because a "friend of mine" was dating a "friend of his". I had never seen this guy with the super-dark hair before... so dark that it was the first true "blue-black" hair I had ever seen. I really had no idea that he lived right upstairs from me in the dorm. Turns out he DID know I lived below him. Turns out he also liked my eyes.

As we all filtered out of the cafeteria, I sort of wondered when this guy was going to go on his merry way and head back to where-ever it was that he lived. When he told me he lived in the same building as me, I was shocked. And so we walked on...

Over the next couple weeks, we spent more time together, presumably because our friends were dating. We became partners in card games. We sat side-by-side on late-night IHOP runs. I casually watched as he carefully broke off the relationship he was "sort of" already in.

(Do you like how my infamous eyes are half-closed??? He's a cutie though!)

We had a ton of fun together. I thought he was clever and handsome and romantic. He found all sorts of crazy reasons to stop by and see me. From the start he told me, "I'm not looking for a serious relationship right now." I flippantly replied (because I thought I was one wild, independent woman at such a young age), "I can't commit to favorite color much less a man!" Well... perfect.

Except we were inseparable. Everyone else called us a couple-- friends, professors, the staff who worked in the cafeteria... even his roommate referred to me as "his girlfriend". The dating friends who had brought us together had long since split up. But our relationship kept right on going. In time, even WE accepted it. :)

I am three months older than my husband but a whole year ahead in school. And so, when I graduated that May, I was headed back to Connecticut and he to Indiana. He still had one more year of school in Florida to finish up.

So we broke up. For no reason other than distance. We couldn't envision sustaining our relationship with all those miles between us. Face it- we were used to living one staircase apart. Thousands of miles sounded ridiculous!

(Becoming his Mrs... what a joyous occasion!)

In the end? We couldn't stay apart. I flew to Indiana to spend a week with him. We visited and called and emailed through his senior year. Our "no-commitment" relationship eventually turned into a 7 1/2 year marriage (so far!) with two children and one more on the way.

Good thing there's someone with bigger plans than us out there...

Win Yourself Some Bling!

Is anyone at all curious what we're giving away as a grand finale to our Valentine's Exchange of Inspiration and Ideas?

Well, you have a choice. But either way you go, you're gonna sparkle!

Option one is a round-cut blue topaz ring set in sterling silver. The stone is approx. 1 ct and the ring is a size 7. There are tiny silver butterflies visible from the side profile.

If a size 7 won't work for you, or if you simply prefer something different, you can choose a garnet pendant on an 18" sterling silver chain. The stone is oval-cut and approx. 1 ct.

Click on the button on the sidebar to learn more about this week-long celebration and how to get yourself five chances to win! Good luck!

Day 5: Flowers

Sure, roses and bouquets are all ridiculously marked up this time of year. I'm not ignorant to that fact. But, even so, there's something about seeing all those men picking up flowers at the store. Or seeing my co-workers blush at the vases delivered to their desks at work back in my banking days. Or receiving the single red rose from my now-husband back when we were poor college students. I love the traditional beauty and sentiment associated with the giving and receiving of flowers!

Using Petroleum Jelly

One of the least expensive and most useful items in my bathroom cabinet is a tub of petroleum jelly. I reach for that stuff almost every day of my life and for a variety of purposes. Since a whole jar of the stuff costs right around a dollar, even not on sale, it's a very frugal option for a whole lot of uses. Here are a few of my favorites:

For baby:

  • a thin coat helps protect from diaper rash
  • lightly applied to chin, it prevents that drooly teething rash
  • helps heal chapped cheeks
  • protects minor cuts and scratches while they heal
  • forms a barrier to protect a healing circumcision site
For mama:

  • removes stubborn eye makeup
  • softens rough elbows and knees
  • soothes cracked, chapped hands and knuckles
  • moisturizes dry winter legs AND leaves a gleam-y glow behind
  • softens calloused feet (if, like me, you can't stand to wear socks to bed, try applying the petroleum jelly, then sock right before working out-- the heat helps it work!)
  • ease off a too-tight ring
  • fills in as cheap lip-gloss
  • helps staunch the bleeding from tiny shaving nicks
I use petroleum jelly for innumerable other things too! Next week, at our Valentine's Exchange of Inspiration and Ideas, I'll be sharing a craft that puts this stuff to use...

What do you use petroleum jelly for in your home? What's the most useful product in your bathroom cabinet? I'd love to have you share!
