12 Days of the Valentine Queen: Day 5

12 Days of the Valentine Queen

Day 5: Flowers

Sure, roses and bouquets are all ridiculously marked up this time of year. I'm not ignorant to that fact. But, even so, there's something about seeing all those men picking up flowers at the store. Or seeing my co-workers blush at the vases delivered to their desks at work back in my banking days. Or receiving the single red rose from my now-husband back when we were poor college students. I love the traditional beauty and sentiment associated with the giving and receiving of flowers!

Using Petroleum Jelly

One of the least expensive and most useful items in my bathroom cabinet is a tub of petroleum jelly. I reach for that stuff almost every day of my life and for a variety of purposes. Since a whole jar of the stuff costs right around a dollar, even not on sale, it's a very frugal option for a whole lot of uses. Here are a few of my favorites:

For baby:

  • a thin coat helps protect from diaper rash
  • lightly applied to chin, it prevents that drooly teething rash
  • helps heal chapped cheeks
  • protects minor cuts and scratches while they heal
  • forms a barrier to protect a healing circumcision site
For mama:

  • removes stubborn eye makeup
  • softens rough elbows and knees
  • soothes cracked, chapped hands and knuckles
  • moisturizes dry winter legs AND leaves a gleam-y glow behind
  • softens calloused feet (if, like me, you can't stand to wear socks to bed, try applying the petroleum jelly, then sock right before working out-- the heat helps it work!)
  • ease off a too-tight ring
  • fills in as cheap lip-gloss
  • helps staunch the bleeding from tiny shaving nicks
I use petroleum jelly for innumerable other things too! Next week, at our Valentine's Exchange of Inspiration and Ideas, I'll be sharing a craft that puts this stuff to use...

What do you use petroleum jelly for in your home? What's the most useful product in your bathroom cabinet? I'd love to have you share!

Realizing They Really ARE Listening

One of the things that makes me sad about today's society is the steady disappearance of simple manners. It seems like so many parents' expectations have just become so very low that "please", "thank you", and "excuse me" are becoming archaic expressions. Many children I know are not expected to write thank you notes. Many have poor phone etiquette. Not only are too many people not teaching their children good manners, they're also not demonstrating them.

Because that's where it starts.

We cannot expect our children to readily adopt polite speech and behaviors if we're not modeling them consistently. If I don't thank my husband regularly in their presence... if he doesn't excuse himself from the table... if we don't say "please" before asking our children to do something... well, then we can't act surprised when their manners are lacking at the next family gathering.

And so we make sure we're consistent. We make sure they actually hear and see what politeness looks like on a daily basis. We are kind to each other. We try to be thoughtful. We correct gently when needed, but mostly we just keep on demonstrating.

And the result?

After receiving four painful shots without a whimper, my four-year old looked the nurses straight in the eye and said...

"Thank you."

Realizing your efforts have paid off? That's a Finer Thing in Life.

12 Days of the Valentine Queen: Day 4

12 Days of the Valentine Queen

Day 4: Minimal Decorations

Listen, I like getting the house all gussied up for Christmas as much as the next gal. But, when February rolls around, I'm delighted to celebrate a holiday that doesn't require quite so much effort. A pretty heart wreath for the door. A crystal dish of Valentine candy. A vase of red and pink flowers. Some fun Valentine's projects made by my children. Good enough.

A Valentine's Exchange of Ideas and Inspiration!

Please join us!

Next week, we'll be having a progressive Valentine's celebration and exchanging all sorts of ideas and inspiration. From Monday, February 9th through Friday, February 13th, we'll be offering a variety of ways to make this year's Valentine's Day one of the very best yet!

Please join us by sharing your own ideas and inspiration on your blog and linking back with us each day. If you don't have a blog, we welcome your thoughts in the comments.

**************************************************************************

We can't wait to be inspired by all of you!

13 Songs I End Up Singing Every Single Day

I've always loved to sing. As a child, I danced and performed around the living room. By college, I was dedicated to being a part of our choir. And now that I have little ones, they are my audience. I sing loudly and often. I am fortunate to be blessed with a "nice voice"-- I'm never going to be a singing superstar, but people usually seem to enjoy listening to me. That's good enough! I sing a lot more than thirteen songs each day, but here are thirteen that somehow- usually by child request- make it on to the repertoire every day...

  1. The Itsy Bitsy Spider
  2. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
  3. Immaculate Mary
  4. Part of Your World (the Little Mermaid song)
  5. Our Father
  6. Days of the Week (a preschool song to teach the days)
  7. The ABC Song
  8. The ABC Song in French
  9. Seek Ye First
  10. The Lord Said to Noah
  11. The Ants Go Marching
  12. Let It Snow (this one is getting kind of old now... ;))
  13. Lay Down In Your Bed... (our bedtime song that we sing and sign)
I fear there will come a day when my children turn into 'tweens or teens who no longer want to hear me sing... or, worse, are embarrassed if I sing. I hope that doesn't happen but, in the meantime, I'll raise my voice in song all day long! And, yes, I'll keep taking requests...

12 Days of the Valentine Queen: Day 3

12 Days of the Valentine Queen

Day 3: Scarlet Pedicures

Even for the woman who shies away from having ruby-red fingernails (and I am not her, for the record), red toenails can be a fun treat! Valentine's Day is a perfect time to pretty up your tootsies with some jaw-dropping red. Winter feet tend to be neglected... show 'em some love! And show your honey you care enough to take the time to doll up a part of you probably only HE will see this time of year.

(Adding a ruby toe ring is, of course, optional. :) But mine makes me smile!)
